The Arktikum opened on December 6, 1992, on Finland's 75th Independence Day. The Danish firm Birch-Bonderup & Thorup-Waade designed a 172-meter-long glass gallery, featuring approximately 1,000 special glass panels, that faces the river. The exhibition spaces are located underground.
In front of the museum lies the Arctic Garden, a 7-hectare garden on the Ounasjoki River. In the evening, it is one of the best places within walking distance to see the Northern Lights. See Seeing the Northern Lights in Rovaniemi. Other museums and places are listed in sights in Rovaniemi.
