Iceland is one of the most volcanically active regions on earth, earning the island its nickname "the land of fire and ice." This tour takes you to the Geldingalur Valley to see the Fagradalsfjall volcanic crater and how recent fiery eruptions have left their mark on the landscape.
The 2021 eruption lasted for many months, while the 2022 and 2023 eruptions stopped after a few weeks. The area is still very active and fascinating, with 3 eruptions in 3 years!
Explore Iceland’s dynamic landscapes on this exhilarating tour that takes you through moss-covered lava fields. Start with an unforgettable hike in the Geldingadalur Valley, where you’ll witness the raw power of nature at the Fagradalsfjall and Meradalir volcanoes. As you trek through this volcanic wonderland, take in the surreal beauty of the moss-covered lava fields that cover the area. If time permits, you’ll also visit the steaming Seltún Hot Springs, although this stop can be skipped if the hike is too long.
On this tour, you will have every opportunity to learn about the eruptions that have occurred on the Reykjanes Peninsula since 2021. Your guide will point out interesting spots, including the opportunity to see the latest eruption of Sundhnúkur, which began on 18 December 2023 and subsided 3 days later. You will also learn about previous eruptions at Fagradalsfjall, Meradalir and Litli Hrutur, weather and safety permitting.
This adventure promises an immersive experience in Iceland's most enchanting surroundings.
Reykjavik
You will be picked up at the chosen pick-up location. Please note that there may be delays as people are picked up at different locations and traffic can cause delays.
(Depending on the duration of the volcano hike we skip this stop)
At Seltún you can see the effect that geothermal waters can have on an environment. Walk along the wooden paths that wind between boiling and hissing mud pools and streams of naturally hot water that flow over the colorful soil and rocks. The air is thick with the smell of sulfur that emanates from these hot springs. Below the surface, the hot water dissolves minerals such as sulfur from the rocks and soil, creating this distinctive stench. Two viewing platforms hang above the area, giving you a 360-degree view of the area.
We join the hiking trail around the remains of the lava field from the 2021 Fagradalsfjall eruption. The first part is the steepest before the trail levels out for a few kilometers. This last part is mossy and bumpy, requires careful hiking and could be considered difficult. Total hiking time is around 2 hours, but it can be a bit shorter or longer depending on the route we take on a particular day.
We will go as close as possible to the most recent volcano. How close depends on many factors, including weather conditions.
You will be dropped off at the place where you were picked up that morning. This concludes a day full of impressions and experiences that have introduced you to the real Iceland.

An excellent experience! France, our guide, was very knowledgeable and explained things in easy to understand terms. She was happy to answer questions. Great tour. Highly recommended.
Alan was our guide, he was very knowledgeable and provided interesting facts throughout the walk. He provided background and fun facts in general about Iceland. The walk was beautiful, we made a few different stops and got to see different views of where volcanoes were erupting. Great tour guide and great reliable tour company
It was my first tour in Iceland, expectations were very high because I wanted to see lava, hot liquid red lava on this tour. The tour guide politely and clearly explained that the eruption was over so we could not see it. But the tour was very nice, we walked a lot along the lava fields and the guide explained a lot about volcanic eruptions and geography.
Guin (?) was a great guide full of interesting information & facts, not only about geology but also about the city/country. Communication & pick up went smoothly. The 12km hike was challenging but worth it - interesting and the views are spectacular. Bring food & water! This tour does not include a stop at a restaurant or shop where you can buy lunch.
